Trip Description

Hello fellow adventurers!

This is my third trip I've organized with BCMC with overnight snowshoe trips. I have also organized several trips to Elfin Lakes in the winter with a group called Meetup. I am very familiar with the trail. So, to vary things up a bit, I'd like to start the snowshoe on Friday evening to do a night hike. We will meet at 7pm at the Starbucks off Sea to Sky Highway and Mamquam , near the Canadian Tire. The logging road up can be tricky in the winter. Winter tires and chains are necessary. Also, if someone has AWD perhaps we can car pool up the logging road. We will park at the chain up area. I've seen and experienced too many scary encounters in the past with the cars coming back down from the trail head.

The snowshow to Elfin Lakes should take approximately 4-5 hours and is 11km long. We'll take short stop at Red Heather to eat and warm on our way up.

We will also stay overnight Saturday as well, of which we'll spend Saturday day exploring our way to Opal Cone via snowshoe. This portion will be exploratory and we will stay away from avalanche hazards as much as possible. I do not have my AST, although I have read most of the theory;) Safety is a priority for me, so we won't be taking any risks.

Opal cone is an extinct volcano approximately 6.5km away from Elfin Lakes. I believe the elevation gain is 300m with views of Garibaldi Neve and Mamquam Lake. We will leave around 8am Saturday morning to explore Opal Cone.
