Mount Adams is one of the Cascade Volcanoes, just north of the Oregon-Washington border a few hours east of Portland. The Adams Glacier route is fairly straight forward when it comes to route finding, but can be an interesting maze to find our way through crevasses and seracs to the top! It's also one of the tallest of the Cascade Volcanoes at 3,743m.
For the climb, get your glacier game on! Expect up to 50 degree slopes, man-eating crevasses, and some really fun climbing! We'll descend via the North Ridge, which is basically a walk-off. Participants should have mountaineering experience of PD- or better, glacier travel and crevasse rescue training, AST1 or better, basic belay skills, and basic snow anchor skills.
The schedule will be as follows:
Friday, May 27: leave the Lower Mainland in the afternoon/evening and drive part or all the way down to Mt. Adams, car camping the first night
Saturday, May 28: obtain climbing permits at the ranger station in Randle, WA. It's $15 USD per person, so be sure to bring some US cash. Approach the mountain and camp at Killen Meadows
Sunday, May 29: Summit day and return to Killen Meadows
Monday, May 30: Hike out, and drive back to the Lower Mainland
This trip will only go if avalanche conditions are reasonable (moderate or better), and the weather forecast looks promising (POP <40%). Possibility to be rescheduled to another weekend following if conditions don't happen to work out. Final decision to be made the week prior based on the forecast.
I'll set up a spreadsheet to work out group gear and carpooling a little closer to the trip.
The photo below shows the glacier during the first week of August 2015, after an unusually low snow year. I expect it to be much more snow-covered and filled-in this year.
