Trip Description

My wife (Ruth) and I have been hoping to do this trip for a number of years.  We are a couple in our early 50s and will be taking our two dogs (border collies).

Access is on the forest service road at the top of the hill between Furry Creek and Britannia Beach on the Sea to Sky Highway.  High clearance 4 wheel drive required.  I will have my F350 pickup, which can take 6 people.

Folks will need to bring their own food, but lets do things we can share for dinner.  Once we know who is signed up we can figure out the dinners.

Everyone should be self-sufficient for breakfast and lunches.

There is no stove in the hut, so carrying in cooking equipment is necessary.  I will take in two stoves and butane.

Note the forest fire danger is high (& our daughter is a forest fire fighter), so we do not expect to have any fires up there, and even if the forest fire danger drops, we are above treeline, so the availability of wood is minimal.

Bug spray: bring it!  Along with sun screen, hat and sunglasses.

At 1630 m, (~5,340 feet), it will be significantly colder than in the valley, particularly at night, so bring warm clothes even if the forecast is hot.  Better to have warm clothes and not need them, than not have them and need them.

The hike in is from the Furry Creek drainage starting at Cyrtina Creek following the forest service road.  There was clearing done on this trail last year, but we can expect it to be overgrown and may have to do some clearing as we go in, so if you have some tools that would be great.  At the fourth switchback we will pick up the trail to Wind Lake through some old growth.  Once at Wind Lake it should be easy undulating going past many beautiful lakes until we get to the hut.  The trail is marked by cairns.

Last year the hut had foam mattresses, so you just need to bring a sleeping bag.

We will be scrambling on the local mountains:

Mount Sheer - there may be a bit of tricky route finding, and could be some class 4 near the top, so those not comfortable need not go to the summit.  You can see a trip report here: http://bivouac.com/TripPg.asp?TripId=7849  (copy & past, but you may have to be a member of bivouac.com.

Ben Lomond - scrabling

Then we can see about going up some other things if we feel like it, or swimming in the mountain lakes.  Other mountains around: Red Mountain, Ben Lui, Ben More, Ben Avon.
