Trip Description

Crevasse Rescue Response
A beginner-friendly training session. Active club members have priority.

Location: Mt. Seymour.

Prerequisites: None

Session Fee: $0.00

First priority is given to those who

  • Have participated in community-type trips (trail building etc.)
  • Have been a club member for at least 1 year.
  • Have been on at least three club outdoors trips in the past 12 months.
  • Have zero bailing incidents on club's records.

Agenda

  • Alpine knots (12).
  • Fall factor and impact forces.
  • Ultimate backup.
  • About glacier travel gear: ropes, snow pickets, ice screws, prusiks, ascenders, ice axes, ski poles, backpack sling, crampons, anchor material.
  • Glacier anchors: pickets, snow bollards, ice screws, v-threads. SRENE principle.
  • Roping up for glacier travel: 2 and 3-climbers rope teams. Kiwi coil.
  • Hauling systems 1:1, 2:1, 3:1 - standard rigging / using TIBLOC.
  • Crevasse Rescue Response Protocol in a three-person rope team.

Personal Gear (crossed items are not necessary - this is a "dry" session without actual snow or ice)

  • 30-70m 8mm half rope (or else)
  • helmet
  • harness + belay device (Reverso type)
  • crampons
  • ice axe with a (accordion) leash on a locker (ice tool hammer would be better)
  • carabiners: 4 non-lockers + 4 lockers + 1 large pear shape
  • anchor material: cords and slings (Nylon, Dyneema, Spectra)
  • 2 5-mm prusiks + 1 short
  • Mechanical ascender (e.g. Tiblock, Ropeman)
  • Two 61-cm snow pickets with runners attached
  • Two 16-cm ice screws
  • personal emergency kit incl. medical
  • headlamp with spare fresh batteries
