I plan to go to a climbing area with easily accessible top anchor bolts. If required, we'll split the group into those that want to begin climbing immediately and those that want to *REVIEW* and *PRACTICE* building top rope anchors at bolted stations. We'll most likely continue afterword to climb there but we might move to a nearby area with more challenging "sport" or mixed (crack and bolts) routes. I expect there will be opportunities for leading as well as top-roping... depending skill levels. My preference is to climb at Murrin Park for this weekend's outing... but that may change depending on conditions, group size and skill level.
If you are a NEW climber, please note that every participant on this trip must have *at least* some recent top roping experience, either indoors or outdoors. Those new to climbing are encouraged to take an indoor intro climbing course and/or an outdoor intro climbing course from a qualified instructor.
All participants must bring their own personal climbing gear... including: harness, belay device, locking biner, climbing shoes, and helmet. Please be aware that on my trips, no helmet = no climbing. Also highly recommended is a prussic for rappelling, a PAS (personal anchor system) for securing yourself, plenty of water and energy snacks. Ropes & anchor material for this event are provided by participants and not by the club. If you have a full strength climbing rope and anchor material, please do bring it.
During the practice session, I will be sharing the basic techniques I've learned for building and taking down anchors at single-pitch bolted stations. I expect everyone in the Review & Practice group will have taken some type of anchor building course in the past. Our goal will be to review how NOT to build an anchor, as well as how to build safe "redundant" anchors for single-pitch Top Roping routes with a bolted station. We will NOT be covering advanced topics such as 3 & 4 point "Trad" anchors or "quick" multi-pitch bolted anchor building techniques.
We'll meet at 9:00 am at the St. David's Church parking lot located at Hwy 1 and Taylor Way, in West Vancouver. If you need a ride to the church, please post a request in this trip's planning forum and/or message me. We'll aim to arrive back in Vancouver about 6:00 pm.
EMERGENCY CONTACT: please make sure your Emergency Contact info has been added to your web-account profile. You can do this by logging into the bcmc.ca website, then click on: My Account > Edit Profile Information > Private Info and add your Emergency Name and Phone Number info. Please reenter your password to complete the process. Your emergency contact info is stored *privately* and only made available to those organizing trips *you* choose to attend.
MEDICAL ISSUES: if there are any current medical issues that should be shared with the Trip Organizer(s), please send me an email message and/or phone me ASAP to let me know. For example, if you are very allergic to bee/wasp bites, or you are taking medication that could be vital information to First Aid Responders. Anything you choose to share with me will remain private.
Cancellation due to weather: - check the weather forecast for where we're going on the morning of the trip (Environment Canada - weatheroffice.gc.ca). If the forecast is 40% PoP or less then we'll go. Anything *above* 40% PoP and the trip is automatically cancelled... *unless* the trip organizer contacts the group to say otherwise.
NOTE: if you've answered the trip screening questions for one of my recent outings then you don't need to re-answer them... unless the answers have changed :-)
