Let's get together and refresh or practice our mountaineering skills. My hope is that we will each bring some skills and knowledge to share with the group, and we can practice some or all of the following:
- crampon technique
- avalanche transceiver practice
- roped travel and running belays (for steep snow/ice or glacier travel)
- building snow and/or ice anchors
- rappelling (with and without belay device)
- ascending fixed lines with prussics and/or mechanical ascenders
- self- and team-arrest techniques
- crevasse rescue
- winter camping skills (e.g. building snow shelters)
This trip will run on the north shore mountains (e.g. Seymour) if there is enough snow, otherwise we will pick another location (e.g. Garibaldi or Manning). I would like to practice both Saturday and Sunday, with an overnight on Saturday night to practice our winter camping skills. If participants can only go on EITHER Saturday or Sunday, that's alright too.
THIS IS NOT A MOUNTAINEERING COURSE. It is expected that participants have some or all of the skills listed above, and would like to practice with others and share their knowledge and experience. For example, I have various levels of formal training or experience in most of the skills above, but would like to learn more about building snow bollards, ascending fixed lines, and building snow shelters.
Required gear list:
- crampons that fit your boots
- ice axe (technical or non-technical)
- helmet
- harness
- prussics, beaners
- camping gear if staying overnight
- your usual warm clothes, food, personal gear, headlamp
- avvy gear (shovel, probe, beacon)
Recommended gear list (please bring if you have!)
- ice screws and snow pickets
- mechanical ascender
