This course is for up to six BCMC members with avalanche training (AST-1 or higher), glacier travel/rescue experience, and overnight backpacking experience looking to enter the world of Ski Mountaineering. This course is taught by the Canada West Mountain School. Please note this is an overnight trip and location is heavily dependant on conditions; however, it will likely be held in the Whistler/ Blackcomb backcountry. This trip is open to skiers and splitboarders.
Note 1: if this course is not fully booked, i.e. 6 paid participants, by Monday January 19th, 2015 then this course will be cancelled and refunds will be provided to those that paid.
Base Course Fee: $265 (Special BCMC Members price, includes GST).
Extra cost of $56 for the lift access fee for Whistler/Blackcomb access
Course Objectives:
- Recognition of hazards specific to winter ski Mountaineering
- Review of basic rope management techniques (belaying methods, knots, rope coiling, tying-in and double-checking)
- Efficient movement through Alpine terrain in winter conditions on skis
- Movement on steep snow with crampons and ice ax
- Climbing techniques for steep snow and mixed rock/snow/ice
- Ongoing technique coaching and skill development matched to your individual level
- Alpine climbing anchor construction with considerations for winter snowpack variability
- Winter survival tips
- HAVING FUN!!
Requirements:
- Strong skiing ability (should be able to ski black diamond level runs in the backcountry)
- AST-1 or higher
- Glacier travel/ glacier rescue experience
- Overnight backpacking experience

On-line Registration Process: once you register online, your name is automatically placed on the "Request List" for the organizer to process. Once the Organizer approves your registration, your name is placed on the "Waiting List" until your payment has been received either by cheque or PayPal/Credit Card (see below). After payment has been received, your name will be placed on the "Confirmed List" and a confirmation email will be sent. Note that course registration priority is on a first-come-first-served basis and your participation is NOT guaranteed until you have paid and your name is on the "Confirmed List"... so it's important that you pay the course fee ASAP after being notified that you are on the "Waiting List".
Payment: PayPal/Credit Card payment is preferred and can be made through the BCMC website (click on the "Pay Now" button on the course description page -- You must be logged in on the website and your name must be on the "Waiting List" for the button to be visible on the course page). Alternatively, cheques can be made payable to British Columbia Mountaineering Club and mailed to PO Box 2674, Vancouver, BC V6B 3W8; Important Note: you MUST make arrangements with the organizer to keep a spot open for you while your cheque is in transit or your place may be taken by someone else. Cancellation fees may apply in case of a cancellation by a participant.
