Presentation: Thursday 2 April at 6.30 pm at a place TBA. Topics will include building techniques for various shelter options: e.g. igloo, emergency snow trench, snow cave and quinzee. Gear options will be discuss so bring a note book and pen.
Workshop Weekend: The Original Plan "A" and Plan "B" have been changed due to poor local snow conditions. Assuming we get more snow (eg. for a base of about 4-5 feet) the revised plan will be to hold the evening workshop on Thursday 2 April and the weekend workshop on 4 and 5 of April. Depending on weather and snow conditions on Mt. Seymour, we might move the weekend location to a better but less convenient place which would involve more driving but we will have longer daylight hours. We plan to use snow shoes so non-skiers can participate. This is a “hands-on” weekend and I hope there will be sufficient time for all students to participate in building at least two shelters and sleep in one. Self-sufficient camping gear required: bring a tent if you want to! Obviously a snow saw for block cutting and snow shovel are needed. We also recommend a bivvy bag which also accepts your mattress to help keep stuff dry, and a tarp in case things go south.
