Trip Description

A 2 day course on learning to lead climb on ice.  There is a cost of $75 for this course, payable to the Club.  The course is lead by Jeremy Thom, a BCMC member. This course is for experienced ice climbers who are solid on top rope and are looking to start leading, and also for those that are newer to leading on ice.  If you are an experienced climber but a bit rusty/ tenuous, this course is also open to you.  Please review the requirements below before proceeding to sign up.

Please Note: The dates for this course are subject to minor changes, due to the instructor's professional commitments, and may have to be rescheduled on short notice.  Course is also heavily dependent on weather.

We will most likely be based in Lillooet (depending on conditions) so hotel, meals, and transportation will be extra .

Experience Requirements

  • solid basic ice climbing technique, able to comfortably top rope WI4 or harder
  • at least 2 seasons and 20 days of experience top roping
  • experience climbing many types of ice:  E.g. plastic, bulletproof, wet, soft, brittle, chandeliered, grainy, rotten, snice, thin, dinner plating, cauliflowered and very cold ice (even just for short stretches on them)
  • comfortable leading on rock and building multidirectional rock anchors
  • basic understanding of fall factor and impact force, and how the type of rope used and the spacing of gear affect those

*Note  While the course will focus on teaching/ improving upon leading skills, there will only be mock leads.

You don't need ice tools but do need a helmet, harness, belay device, suitable boots, and crampons with front points and, preferably, secondary points.
