Trip Description

Garibaldi Park has great geological stories, everywhere you look. There are remarkably diverse volcanic landforms: flat-topped Table, lava-dammed Garibaldi Lake, blocky-topped lava flows, multi-hued Opal Cone and Cinder Cone volcanoes,1857 Barrier landslide that buried10 km of valley, and the red-rock desert crater of Mt Price to name a few. There are also glacial features: the stunning glaciers of today, and the debris fields and moraines that mark their rapid retreat over the past century. And there is the surprising contrast of soft ridges of sedimentary rock adjacent to craggy granite spires.

Bob Turner is a retired federal geologist and long time resident of Bowen Island who loves to poke around the corners of Garibaldi Park and the greater Howe Sound region. He has been explaining geology and landscapes to audiences for over 20 years. He is the co-author of the popular book of Vancouver geology "Vancouver - City on the Edge" and the guide "Sea to Sky Geotour: Geology and Landscapes along Highway 99.

The presentation will be free but we'll have a donation box for the Friends of Garibaldi Park Park Society, a volunteer group that works on behalf of Garibaldi Park.
