Trip Description

This was rescheduled for Oct 24/25, due to weather.

The BC Mountaineering Club is pleased to offer - again-  club members (only) the opportunity to attend the BCMC Intro to Ice Climbing Program on Oct 24th for 4 participants and the same course on Oct 25th for 4 more/different participants.

Cost: $25 (All proceeds will go to buying ice climbing tools for the club that will be used for future courses)

-If you want to make an additional donation towards our club-ice-tools a total of $ 35 or $50 (instead of $ 25) are greatly appreciated!!

Topics covered:

  • Use of ice tools
  • Use of crampons, focus on climbing with your feet essential for confidence and endurance
  • Introduction to steep ice climbing techniques, efficient movement on steep ice
  • Introduction to use of Ice protection and anchors (screws and V treads)
  • Common mistakes and what to try and avoid
  • Discussion about safety procedures
  • Lots of climbing with coaching on steeper climbs. You will be surprised at what you can climb when using modern ice tools and proper body positioning.
  • If time allows practice "seconding" which involves removing gear placed by the "lead" climber.

 Schedule:

  • Allow at least 2.5 hours to drive from Vancouver to the meeting place (DON’T FORGET YOUR PASSPORT)
  • 8am Meet in Parking Lot at the top of Glacier Creek Road
  • 10am arrive at the Coleman Glacier
  • 4:30 till 6:30 Hike back to car
  • Drive back to Vancouver

Pre-Requisite:

  • Participants must be (minimum) experienced outdoor top ropers 5.8/5.9 and have used/climbed with crampons in the alpine/on a glacier before (basic alpine course would be an asset as we are climbing on glacier seracs) If in doubt - tell me about your experience

Weather:

  • We will go up to 30% pop

Experience:
  1. Since how many years/seasons are you climbing out doors?
  2. What grade can you solidly follow/top rope in Squamish?
  3. What grade can you solidly lead in Squamish?
  4. How often do you climb in a season out doors?
  5. Do you have basic alpine training/experience ?
  6. To what extend have you climbed/walked on a glacier / or on an ice waterfall with crampons before?
  7. Can you bring a rope?
  8. Do you have two ice tools? (If not- we have some to borrow)
  9. Do you have crampons? (For ice climbing or general mountaineering - no aluminum or light weight glacier travel crampons) If no – rent at MEC
  10. Can you bring ice screws? (How many?) If not – no problem

     

Car pooling:

  1. Do you have a car? 2 WD is sufficient
  2. How many guests with packs can you accommodate?
  3. Where do you start your trip? -City and area-
  4. Can you come on Saturday?
  5. Can you come on Sunday?
  6. Which day do you prefer?
