This is not a full navigation course, but a chance for GPS beginners to practice. We will talk briefly about theory -- grid system (UTM) and datums (NAD27, etc.) -- and then go for an easy hike in the Mt. Seymour backcountry, practicing the following along the way:
- Using GPS to find current location on a paper map
- Inserting a waypoint read from the map and using the GPS to navigate to the waypoint
- Setting up routes of waypoints
- Converting between waypoints in different datums
- Using the trackback feature (track log)
Bring
- Your own GPS (and manual if you don't know how to navigate the menus and change the settings)
- Map (details to be provided) and compass
- Notebook and pencil
