Trip Description

A second day was added and yet we still managed to fill both and get a long waiting list within the first 12 hours. I will try and organise some water ice courses in January so keep an eye out if you missed out this time around.

The BC Mountaineering Club is pleased to offer club members (only) the opportunity to attend the BCMC Intro to Ice Climbing Program.

Cost: $25

Topics covered:

  • Use of ice tools
  • Use of crampons, focus on climbing with your feet essential for confidence and endurance
  • Introduction to steep ice climbing techniques, efficient movement on steep ice
  • Introduction to use of Ice protection and anchors (screws and V treads)
  • Common mistakes and what to try and avoid
  • Discussion about safety procedures
  • Lots of climbing with coaching on steeper climbs. You will be surprised at what you can climb
  • when using modern ice tools and proper body positioning.
  • If time allows practice "seconding" which involves removing gear placed by the "lead" climber.

 Schedule:

  • Allow at least 2.5 hours to drive from Vancouver to the meeting place (DON’T FORGET YOUR PASSPORT)
  • 8am Meet in Parking Lot at the top of Glacier Creek Road
  • 10am arrive at the Coleman Glacier
  • 4:30 till 6:30 Hike back to car
  • Drive back to Vancouver
