After much anticipation we are pleased to announce that the summer mountaineering program is on. It is open to 12 participants with previous hiking, backpacking and scrambling experience who would like to take their skills to the next level. Previous basic rope and rock experience will be a plus.
The program instructors are active mountaineers and club members who have a wealth of experience to pass on.
This program is for members-only. If you are a new member joining to take the course, you will be required to prepay two years of the club membership.

June 9,2009 – evening session: meet the instructors, gear talk, getting organized
June 13-14, 2009
June 20-21, 2009
June 27-28, 2009(all overnight weekends)
Plus another evening session, potentially on June 16, 2009.
Location: to be determined but some of the popular locations where we have had the program in the past include Cerise Creek, North Shore mountains, Mount Baker
Topics covered:
- use of crampons
- use of ice axe, self arrest
- snow anchors and belay systems
- rope management, knots, prussiks
- travel in a roped team
- glacier travel – reading the terrain, assessing hazards
- crevasse rescue
- ‘summit day’ as part of the last weekend, weather and conditions permitting
Gear required:
In addition to being equipped for an overnight camping, you will be required to provide your own helmet, crampons (that fit your boots), an ice axe and a handful of carabiners and prussiks.
