A recreational avalanche course designed for winter recreationists
will be given in the Vancouver area on January 31 and February 1st. This
will be a practical and comprehensive course based on a curriculum that is
recognized all over the world by climbing clubs or winter recreationists.
It is hoped that this will eventually become a standard program taught to
members of mountaineering clubs in British Columbia who do not require the
specific certification or endorsement that may be required by someone
involved in a commercial or professional venture.
Frank Baumann and Jay McArthur will be teaching the course. Frank Baumann has been teaching avalanche courses for over 30 years, is a former ACMG ski guide and member
of the BCMC and the First Aid Ski Patrol at Whistler Mountain. For the
FMCBC, he developed the first recreational avalanche course taught in
British Columbia. As a professional engineer, he has been involved for many
years in designing avalanche safety programs for industrial clients, as well
as analyzing commercial avalanche incidents for the Chief Coroner's Office
in British Columbia.
THIS COURSE IS INTENDED FOR TRIP LEADERS AND PEOPLE WHO LEAD INSTRUCTIONAL PROGRAMS FOR THE CLUB.
The idea is to create a 'train a trainer' type of the course and the participants will be expected to pass on the knowledge to other club members through either organizing a trip or teaching a similar avalanche skill refresher to other club members.
